Artist Statement
I live in San Francisco and work as a marketer focusing on advertising and branding. I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Originally from Texas, I’ve lived in New York City, Chicago and Alaska. My work has evolved to what you see now: contemporary landscapes, color studies and pure abstractions. I am drawn to natural landscapes and more recently I’m finding urban environments stimulating. My inspirations are varied. Traveling to new places always inspires me. I am particularly attracted to Asia at the moment.
Approach
I record my ideas in a small journal/sketchbook. Once I am satisfied with a concept more elaborate sketches in colored pastel to scale are created before beginning the actual painting. Not all of my works begin this way. Often I’ll imagine what something looks like completed and then work backwards to record my idea. Many of my works are developed as a series. I like working in a series because it allows me to fully express an idea. Sometimes an idea can extend to as many as twelve paintings or just two. I don’t always know how large a series will be until I’ve started.
Medium
The color studies start with oil glazing and then develop with palette work on traditional canvas. Larger scale works are created on linen, silk and linen and wood panels. I use traditional mediums and oil glazing where several layers are applied over many weeks. Mixing mediums like pastel with oil paint has proved successful and gives the work a drawing type of quality. Currently I’m working with silver rubbing and oil glazing on birch panels.
